FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is collagen?

Collagen is the most abundant protein and the second largest substance in the body, behind water. It is a structural protein, which makes up 75% of our skin. Collagen is also most commonly found in our bones, cartilage and connective tissues. Other structures that are primarily made of collagen include our hair and nails.

Collagen acts as the glue within the body, providing structural support, strength and a degree of elasticity. In the skin, collagen helps form a fibrous network, upon which new cells can grow. It is also required in the replacement and restoration of dead skin cells.

Why is collagen important?

Collagen is naturally produced by the body, however, as we reach our mid 20’s, collagen levels begin to decrease at approximately 2% per year leading to visible signs of ageing. As we reach our 50’s, over half the amount of collagen in our bodies is lost.

The production of  collagen is also impacted by sun exposure, poor diets as well as environmental pollution and toxins such as cigarettes.

As a result of reduced levels of collagen production, skin begins to lose its structural integrity, leading to sagging skin, the formation of lines and wrinkles and the weakening of joints and bones.

Eridani Marine collagen works from within to promote optimal skin function, by delivering essential micro-nutrients to the collagen matrix below the dermis. Replenishing collagen levels daily helps to improve the building blocks that maintain hair, skin and nails, joints and bones.

Eridani Marine Collagen is sustainably made from the skin of fish that would otherwise be discarded in the fillet process.

We source our marine collagen from a variety of fish species such as cod, haddock, salmon and tilapia to avoid placing too much demand on one species.

Is Eridani Marine Collagen farmed or wild-caught?

Eridani uses marine collagen that complies with most international including the European Regulations (EC) and the European regulation (EC) on contaminants as well as the Chinese National Food Safety Standards for collagen peptide.

Fish species are either farmed or wild-caught. They are deemed fit for human consumption and guaranteed by health certificates signed by official veterinarians and only come from establishments registered by the European Union for the production and import of edible fish.

What is the difference between Marine and Bovine Collagen?

Marine collagen is sourced from fish skin and scales, whilst bovine collagen comes from cow hides.

There are different types of collagen within each source. Type I, II and III.

Type I is the most abundant type of collagen found in the human body. It’s the strongest type, meaning it works the most effectively to heal and rebuild in your body.

Marine collagen is primarily a Type I collagen, which means that it is the most similar in structure to human collagen and the best suited to top up the body’s collagen needs; whilst bovine is a mixture of Type I and Type III.

Different sources also means that they come from different environments. The environment in which the animals live can play a role in the quality of the collagen supplement.

Marine collagen, is the cleanest of the available types of collagen, whilst land animals have a higher risk of contamination through hormones and disease.

As with any dietary supplement, it is extremely important to find the cleanest and best one available, as it will be directly absorbed by your body.

Eridani Marine Collagen has been naturally hydrolysed to create a low molecular weight collagen peptide powder. The lower the molecular weight, the easier collagen is to process and absorb by the body.

Marine collagen has been shown to absorb 1.5 times more efficiently in the body than bovine collagen, meaning it has optimal bioavailability

Bioavailability is a measure of absorption; it describes the portion of a substance that enters the circulation when introduced into the body.

As it’s absorbed more efficiently and enters the bloodstream quickly, hydrolysed marine collagen is considered to be the best source of collagen for nutraceutical applications as it means more noticeable results can  be achieved in a shorter amount of time.

How much should I take?

Studies have shown that 2.5g (2500mg) of marine collagen is a sufficient enough amount to show improvements in fine lines and wrinkles, hair, skin and nails.

Level 1 25-35 yrs - ONE SERVE - Provides a natural boost to collagen production. A preemptive step to maintaining well-being

Level 2 35-45 yrs - TWO SERVES When the first signs of ageing are visible - Increasing the amount of collagen promotes visible outward changes and overall well-being

Level 3 45 yrs + - THREE SERVES For deeper wrinkles, dull complexion, fine hair and brittle nails. Also helps to maintain joint and bone health

Taking 2 – 3 sachets (6-9 grams) per day helps to accelerate results.
